Yorkshire writer raises awareness of Brooke for National Storytelling Week

National Storytelling Week (27 January - 4 February) celebrates people coming together to share all kinds of stories, from traditional tales to modern narratives. In 2019, Yorkshire-based author and entrepreneur Hannah Russell visited Brooke in Kenya, and was inspired to write her most recent children’s book to raise awareness of its work.

Children from Thiba Primary School in Kenya read Little Alf's Adventures Around the World as part of National Storytelling Week.

Hannah Russell, who rose to fame at age 17 with her award-winning Little Alf children’s book series, has dedicated her latest release to Brooke, after a visit to one of their school clubs in Kenya inspired her to write, Little Alf’s Adventures Around the World. Now, to mark National Storytelling Week, Hannah has shared copies with the children she met who helped her “bring Little Alf’s story to life”.

As a Youth Ambassador for Brooke, Hannah has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the charity. In 2019, Hannah visited Brooke’s Donkey Care Club in Kenya, a school club where local children are taught how to look after their donkeys.

Hannah said: “Having visited Brooke’s Donkey Care Clubs, I know the children there learn wonderful things about how to improve the lives of their animals.

“I hope that my new book Little Alf’s Adventures around the World helps to illustrate the important work Brooke does through storytelling and give working animals around the world a bright and happy future.”

Hannah’s 15th Little Alf book follows Little Alf, based on Hannah’s miniature Shetland pony, travelling to Brooke’s different countries of operation to learn about the vital work horses and donkeys do, in allowing families to put food on their tables, earn a living and send their children to school. The bestselling series has become a social media sensation on release and has been published in multiple languages.

Founded in 1934, Brooke supports the lives of over 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules, of which 600 million people rely on everyday, worldwide.
