In Ethiopia - one of the world’s poorest countries – the destiny of the people is inextricably intertwined with the welfare of their animal, on which they depend to bring in a daily income. 98% of the rural population own at least one horse, donkey or mule, with an average family of five people or more relying on the income generated from each animal. If the animal can’t work, the family can’t earn any money.

The work the Brooke does on a daily basis is crucial to educating owners on how to look after their animals, so that they can continue to support their livelihoods. After all, 80% of welfare problems suffered by equine animals are preventable and as such the most powerful tool for improving animal welfare is preventing problems before they arise.

When equine animals are healthy and happy they can work productively and in partnership with their owners, without pain or distress. As Joy Pritchard, Head of Animal Welfare at the Brooke explains: “By developing animal owners’ equine animal care and management skills, we’re taking a big step to enriching families. We’re reducing the suffering of animals and people and doing it sustainably.”

As you will see from Liz’s article, the Brooke has already had success in the Southern region of Ethiopia. But more still needs to be done: If you can help, please visit www.helpboth.org to make a donation.
